SALEM — The School Committee agreed last night to keep Saltonstall School's unique extended-year schedule in place for the 2012-2013 school year, with the caveat that it be the last year the model is offered only at the popular K-8 school.

Firefighter acts as human shield from flames
BEVERLY — Lt. Paul Rideout didn't have much time to think.
A man was pinned under a burning vehicle that had flipped onto its side. Flames from the car's engine shot perilously close to the immobile body. Rideout and his two fellow firefighters tried twice to free the victim but could not budge him. -
Anti-turbine group gets boost from Falmouth
SALEM — Recent tests showing that a wind turbine in Falmouth exceeded state noise guidelines has bolstered a local group trying to block a turbine planned for Winter Island.
Peter Carlton of Salem Wind, a group fighting the proposed Salem turbine, said the latest test results prove that wind turbines are much noisier than predicted in the studies done by local municipalities. -
Town Meeting OKs most articles
DANVERS — A rather workman-like and expanded Town Meeting that lacked the drama of some recent gatherings passed a net appropriation of $91.6 million for the town's budget, debated whether to create Habitat for Humanity homes at the former Danversport School property and shot down a police proposal to require fingerprint background check for those peddling door-to-door.
