Staff writer

PEABODY —  One man is dead, but a mother and her two children are safe, following an incident last night at 10 Monson Drive.

Police were called to the home at 7:14 p.m. on a report of an unwanted party. Before police arrived, the woman in the home had left in her car with her two children. While she was leaving, several shots were fired at her motor vehicle.

No one was seriously injured, and no one was struck by a bullet, but there was some glass shattered from a broken window, police said.

When police arrived, they found the suspect's car still parked in the vicinity and unoccupied, so they suspected he was still in the home. Peabody police called in the NEMLEC regional swat team and hostage negotiation team, evacuated neighbors and tried to make contact with the suspect. At some point during the investigation, the swat unit was able to use a device to view images from inside the residence and observed what appeared to be a man, deceased. They were able to enter the home and found the body. Cause and manner of death is still under investigation.

No further details were available at press time. Police stressed that there is no danger to the public.

The investigation will be be followed by state police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office and by Peabody police detectives.
