Tractor Supply Co. seeks special permit for Ipswich store

---- — IPSWICH — Planning officials say they are nearing a decision on granting a special permit for Tractor Supply Co. that will allow the farm and lawn retailer to open on Route 1.

The proposed chain store would be at 78 Turnpike Road, the former Tee Time Golf & Ice Cream, across the street from Majestic Dragon restaurant.

A public hearing, which opened on Nov. 14, will continue at the Planning Board’s meeting on Jan. 9. There have been several meetings with the design review board and a Planning Board subcommittee.

“There is progress being made with several issues, including design,” said Planning Director Glenn Gibbs.

Proposed plans call for a 19,724 square-foot building with an approximate 14,715 square-foot outdoor sales area, according to an application submitted by New England Retail Properties Inc. The company will need a special permit from the Planning Board and Conservation Commission approval before moving forward.

New England Retail Properties Inc. of Whethersfield, Conn., will own the land and lease it to Tractor Supply.

“Tractor Supply displays merchandise within their building on the sidewalk directly in front of the building, inside the fenced outdoor yard and within the permanent trailer and equipment display area,” wrote Mark D’Addabbo, president of New England Retail Properties Inc., in the application.

Tractor Supply Co. operates 1,245 retail stores in 48 states, according to the company’s website. Products include riding mowers, power tools, hardware, clothing, lawn maintenance, clothing, and tractor and trailer supplies. The store also sells equine and pet supplies, including animal feed.

“Everything except tractors,” according to the website. “Each store team includes welders, farmers and horse owners who collectively provide an exceptional depth of knowledge and resources.”

The store has also applied for additional permits for the outdoor display area and the sale of propane and welding gas, according to the application.

The main entrance will face away from Route 1, as recommended from feedback from town officials. New England Retail Properties Inc. first came before the board in February, but no official application was filed until September.
