Lekkakos adding new spa to downtown Wenham

WENHAM — Maria Lekkakos is at it again, opening a medical spa in the downtown.

Lekkakos, owner of M. Lekkakos, a full-service salon, spa and boutique, plans to open a sister business named KosmetiQue in the coming weeks.

“It is not your spa where you get facials,” she said. “It is a med spa where you get Botox, filler, laser hair removal, and we also work with laser vein removal and lifting treatments for the face.”

The new business will be staffed by registered nurses and medical aestheticians, she said. It will offer a number of advanced medical treatments including lasers, fillers, injectables, peels and HydraFacial.

When Lekkakos, a Rockport native and former Miss Massachusetts, moved her hair salon from Hamilton to Wenham in 2005, there weren’t many other retail businesses around.

“There was no downtown,” she said. “It was just us.”

Now there’s a clothing store, gourmet cafe and pizza place. Lekkakos owns three commercial businesses downtown and has been credited with much of the area’s commercial development over the past few years.

KosmetiQue will be at the former location of Cake Creative, a brand development and management firm. It’s above Grassy Roots, a juice bar and cafe offering baked goods, coffee, sandwiches, salads and prepared meals, at 152 Main St.

Lekkakos decided to open the medical spa after hearing from her customers. More people have been interested in preventing visible signs of aging, she said.

“I heard my clients, and there was a big demand,” she said. “We had the space next door, so that’s how KosmetiQue was born. It comes out of the customers’ needs.”

Lekkakos said her new spa is meant to complement her current hair salon and spa, which offers organic facials, manicures and pedicures. There is also a small boutique.

Lekkakos has run her business in the area for 14 years and doesn’t regret moving it to Wenham.

“Little Wenham has been thriving with new stores opening,” she said. “We have a clothing store, pizza place, gourmet cafe, and our skin care and hair salon. It gives the residential community a place to shop down here.”
