Wenham's first pizza shop has unique offerings

---- — WENHAM — The wait for pizza here is over.

Mangia Neapolitan Pizzeria at 158 Main St. is now open, and word has spread fast.

“We took down the sign that said ‘coming soon’ and people started flocking in,” manager Anthony Triantafillou said.

Not only is Mangia the first pizza place in town, it also serves up some unique pies.

“We have specialty pizzas that you can’t get anywhere else,” Triantafillou said. “We have shrimp scampi and bacon and scallop pizza.”

There is also “The Amazing Mac and Cheese Pizza!” and “Steve’s Potato Bacon,” which features diced potatoes and lean bacon. Gluten-free options are also available.

The restaurant specializes in New Haven-style pizza, which is known for its thin, crispy crust. All of Mangia’s pies are made with whole-wheat dough and fresh ingredients, owner Steve Fenerjian said.

Besides pizza, the menu also features artisan sandwiches, homemade pasta dishes and “designer” salads.

“All the salads are very popular,” Triantafillou said.

The focus of the business right now is takeout and delivery, but there are a few seats for eat-in. Future plans include more seating, with a counter along the window that looks out onto Route 1A.

The pizza shop is next to M. Lekkakos Salon, Spa & Boutique in a refurbished building owned by Maria Lekkakos, who also owns and leases two other commercially zoned buildings on Route 1A.

There has been a revitalization of sorts in the downtown area with new businesses opening in the past two years, including Grassy Roots cafe and Viola Lovely boutique.

The pizza shop is part of a chain of about 10 stores around Boston and the South Shore. This is the first North Shore location to open.

“Obviously, we are very excited to be in town,” Fenerjian said. “We feel like we are a good fit for the town and think the downtown business district will benefit from having another food establishment.”

Like Triantafillou, Fenerjian said the opening has been going very well.

“We’ve heard positive feedback from the community on a daily basis,” he said.

The store is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and an hour later on Friday and Saturday.
