Dr. Paul M. Copeland, a North Shore Medical Center physician, has been recognized as the recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Clinical Practitioner Award by the Endocrine Society, which annually recognizes endocrinologists for their contributions to the endocrine and medical community. Copeland joined NSMC in 1984 and has been chief of endocrinology for 20 years. During his tenure, he has expanded the diabetes management program, certified by the American Diabetes Association, and has initiated a bone-density testing center, which he currently co-directs. Copeland attended Yale University School of Medicine before completing a residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Copeland will receive the award at the Endocrine Society’s 96th annual meeting and exposition, which will be held in conjunction with the 16th International Congress of Endocrinology in Chicago in June.


The Middlesex and Norfolk Sheriff’s offices celebrated the graduation of 47 new corrections officers from the 36th Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Basic Training Academy. Forty-two graduates joined the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, including Peabody resident Jamal Hijleh; Marblehead resident Ashara Carrington; and Beverly resident Michael Cassola. In order to pass, graduates had to successfully pass both physical fitness and classroom tests, the latter of which entailed 21 weeks of classroom and practical training focused on corrections and criminal justice systems, transportation procedures, defensive tactics, firearms, first-responder training and other areas.


Martha Gardner and Leigh Flaherty have obtained ownership of Timeless Interiors & Gifts, a home furnishings, interior design and gift store in South Hamilton whose previous owner was Sheila Whalen.


The Commonwealth Institute has named R & L Associates Inc. in Beverly to the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses list for 2013. R & L Associates Inc. is a multimillion-dollar, woman-owned revenue producer with several divisions, including a national contract engineering division, the Aries Group Inc. Fran Dichner is the business’s owner, president and chief executive officer.
