SALEM — The popular eatery has been open less than a month, but already there was trouble brewing at the hotspot over the weekend.
Tavern at the Square, a new bar at the site of the old Salem Evening News building, opened on June 2 with much fanfare.
But shortly before closing time early yesterday morning, police said, a Swampscott resident assaulted another man with a glass mug.
Patrolman Rafael Gonzalez was outside the bar on a detail 12:30 a.m. Sunday when a bar employee told him "a guy with long hair and a beard just bottled someone in the face."
The officer began to run down New Derby Street toward Lafayette Street in search of the person described by the bar employee.
As Gonzalez passed Klop Alley, he wrote in his report he heard a car start and spotted a man with a beard and long hair in the passenger's seat, later identified as Benjamin J. Sciucco, 23, of 690 Humphrey St.
The bar employee and two witnesses identified Sciucco as the glass mug-wielding patron.
Sciucco was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the glass mug) and issued a citation for marijuana possession.
