DANVERS — The North Shore Business Forum welcomed Laura Swanson, assistant director of Enterprise Center at Salem State College, to its breakfast meeting Friday at the Danversport Yacht Club to discuss resources available to help small businesses. Economy likely started 2012 with solid job growth
The economy likely produced another solid month of hiring in January, a promising start for 2012.
Economists forecast that employers added a net 155,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate remained 8.5 percent for a second straight month, according to a survey by Factset.

2011 home sales down
Home sales in Massachusetts continued to drop in 2011, with fewer homes sold than the year before, and the trend appears to be the same on the North Shore.
In fact, single-family home sales in the state hit their lowest point since 1990, according to The Warren Group, which released statistics last week. -
Wheeler is named Beverly Cooperative Bank president
BEVERLY — Beverly Cooperative Bank has a new president, but the old president is not going anywhere right now.
The bank announced this month that Senior Vice President Michael Wheeler has been promoted to president. Longtime President Bill Howard will remain with the bank as CEO and chairman of the board of directors. -
Peabody farmer scoops up West Newbury land
PEABODY — Perhaps there is a future for farming in Essex County, based on last week's turnout for an auction of more than 130 acres of agricultural fields in West Newbury.
Farmer Ted Dunajski of Peabody entered the high bid of $675,000 to purchase approximately 135 acres, primarily near the public library. The property, previously owned by Tyler Kimball of Haverhill, was sold at foreclosure auction. -
