Home sales rise sharply in Mass. in June

WALTHAM — Sales of single-family homes in Massachusetts rose to a four-year high in June as many buyers took advantage of tax credits that expired at the end of the month.

The question is whether the momentum will continue now that those credits are gone.

The Massachusetts Association of Realtors said Tuesday that single-family home sales rose just under 25 percent in June compared to a year ago. The median selling price rose more than 8 percent to $331,150.

The 5,179 homes sold in the state last month were the most since June 2006.

The Warren Group, which uses a slightly different method of calculation, reported a 28 percent increase in single-family home sales compared to June 2009 and a nearly seven percent increase in the median selling price.
