Richard Gill and Tamas Juhasz, teachers of Advanced Placement statistics and chemistry, respectively, at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, are two of 22 Massachusetts public high school Advanced Placement teachers who have been named Partners in Excellence Award Winners for their outstanding contributions to student achievement in STEM education. The recipients are among more than 500 teachers at more than 60 schools participating in Mass Insight Education’s AP program focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Gill, Juhasz and other recipients will be honored at the Partners in Excellence Award Celebration at the Museum of Science in Boston on April 17.
Josh Ackman has been named camp and community engagement director of the JCC of the North Shore’s Summer on the Hill camps. Melissa Caplan has also been named director of the new Special Needs Inclusion program at Summer on the Hill camps.
Mark Evans has been appointed clinic director at the Beverly Outpatient Clinic at the Cummings Center in Beverly. Evans is a faculty adviser at Boston College School of Social Work and provides consultation and trainings to schools, Massachusetts state agencies and other venues around the topics of sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, behavior management and other mental health, substance abuse and homelessness issues. Operated by Lahey Health Behavioral Services, the clinic provides counseling to men, women, families, teens and schools.
The YMCA of the North Shore and its 1,154 employee donors across seven locations, including the Salem YMCA, have raised more than $127,000 for the organization’s 2014 Annual Campaign, increasing donations by $11,000, a nearly 9 percent increase over 2013. At the Salem YMCA alone, 149 staff members contributed $12,795.
Eight entrepreneurs have been named semifinalists and will compete for cash prizes and publicity in the Enterprise Center’s 2014 North of Boston Business Plan Competition. Semifinalists are Atlantic Saltworks; Arete Rehabilitation; AuthEntry; CrowdComfort; LearLabs; Madam Posy; We All Scream Ice Scream Co.; and Women on the Move LLC. Over the next few days, the semifinalists will work with coaches in preparation for presentations to judges who will determine the finalists on April 10. The public is invited to the grand finale on April 23 at the Enterprise Center on the Salem State University campus, when the three finalists present their plans to an audience of judges, regional business leaders and other interested attendees. This year’s winner receives $5,000, and second- and third-place winners receive $3,000 and $2,000 respectively.

Boston Children’s Theatre and Shore Country Day School in Beverly have announced a creative and collaborative partnership beginning the summer of 2014. BCT will present its preprofessional Summer Studios program on the Shore Country Day School campus where students ages 9 to 19 will perform in the school’s new, 375-seat theater. Summer Studio attendees will also have access to the school’s Center for Creativity, which includes classrooms for all arts disciplines and studios, and eventually the Innovation Lab.
