DANVERS — Janice Preston was the speaker at the North Shore Business Forum's meeting Friday morning at the Danversport Yacht Club. Preston, who has owned Casa de Moda in Beverly with her husband, Don, for more than 40 years, discussed the realities of running a business as a married couple.
The forum, a group of small business owners, meets every Friday morning at Danversport. Next up: Business Plans for Start Ups and Established Businesses, Sept. 10.
You wouldn't know it from the Republicans, but these are boom times for American energy.
And you wouldn't know it from President Barack Obama, but he has very little to do with that.
Facebook's billionaire CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls himself a "hacker".
For most people, that word means something malicious — shady criminals who listen in on private voicemails, or anonymous villains who cripple websites and break into email accounts.
For Facebook, though, "hacker" means something different. It's an ideal that permeates the company's culture. It explains the push to try new ideas (even if they fail), and to promote new products quickly (even if they're imperfect). The hacker approach has made Facebook one of the world's most valuable Internet companies.
Q: My 2009 Prius has 37,000 miles on it, and this winter my gas mileage has dipped down to near 30 miles per gallon. I purchased the car in January 2011, so I ran it all winter in 2011 and never got less than the low 40s for mileage. Now this winter, I'm in the low 30s. The Toyota dealer's service adviser said it must be the gasoline mixture for the winter. That explains two or three miles less per gallon, but not 10 miles per gallon. I use Exxon Mobil gas, and my tires are properly inflated at 33 psi all around. I called Toyota Corp. and spoke to a customer adviser, and he couldn't come up with anything other than gas mixture and tire inflation. It has to be more than that. There are no red lights on the instrument panel indicating a hybrid problem. Any ideas? It's a mystery!
The economy likely produced another solid month of hiring in January, a promising start for 2012.
Economists forecast that employers added a net 155,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate remained 8.5 percent for a second straight month, according to a survey by Factset.
Home sales in Massachusetts continued to drop in 2011, with fewer homes sold than the year before, and the trend appears to be the same on the North Shore.
In fact, single-family home sales in the state hit their lowest point since 1990, according to The Warren Group, which released statistics last week.
