To the editor:
At a time when the citizens of Beverly are trying to cope with gasoline prices at $4 a gallon, higher food prices every time you go to the grocery store, rising college tuitions, and the advent of new taxes in January because of Obamacare, we are facing a potential new property tax known as CPA. Question 4 proponents would like to raise your property taxes.
Here are some facts that are being ignored by the proponents of Question 4:
Question 4 will raise your property taxes once again!
The Community Preservation Act is nothing more than an OVERRIDE!
Does the city need another SLUSH FUND like the trash fee?
Matching funds from the state are down to 22 percent; that’s not matching dollar for dollar.
Where do “matching funds” come from? From us; they are not free!
Who will decide how the money is spent? A community preservation committee appointed by the mayor — NOT YOU!
The Legislature can change the CPA rules any time!
Are you ready to tax yourself again? Every time your property tax increases, so will this CPA tax override.
I urge you to VOTE NO ON QUESTION 4.
