As we draw closer to Election Day this November, it has become clear to many of us that we need representation in the Senate that is nonpartisan and willing to listen to ideas from all parties involved. In the Massachusetts’ Senate race, that person is current Sen. Scott Brown.
In just two short years, Brown has shown to be a voice of reason, one willing to listen to proposals from both parties before making a decision. A recent study by Congressional Quarterly noted that Brown votes with his party only 54 percent of the time, and his political independence has given him the reputation of being one of the least partisan members of the Senate. Brown is for holding the line on higher taxes and is all for reigning in out-of-control government spending. He understands that to stimulate the economy, our elected officials need to create an atmosphere of regulatory certainty so small businesses can grow, expand and hire more people. One of the senator’s early votes when taking office was to move forward a Democratic proposed jobs bill. While many people falsely believe that creating new government agencies and adding more people to the federal payroll is how to jump-start the economy, in truth, it is America’s small-business community that needs help and reinforces our country’s competitive spirit. Brown understands this concept and will work tirelessly to help small business and the middle class regain and retain our dignity.
Brown believes that the way to get the economy moving is not to raise taxes but to make sure that we all are able to retain more of our income to provide our families, save for our retirements and save for our children’s higher education. The senator has pledged to work on a tax reform bill that keeps tax rates low for the long term.
Brown was instrumental in passing the Wall Street reform bill that instituted a new ethics law banning insider trading and actually broke from his party to end the discriminatory policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in our military. Three jobs bills proposed by Brown were signed into law by the current president, including the “Hire a Hero” tax credit for businesses that hire veterans. Brown also is a strong supporter of issues that are important to women. One only would need to ask his wife, Gail, or one of his daughters if this were true.
As a small-business owner and locally elected official, I have been impressed by the senator’s willingness to listen to voters and engage in meaningful dialogue with both supporters and non-supporters. Scott Brown is a lifelong Massachusetts resident who started his journey into public service at the local level in Wrentham, worked his way up through the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the Massachusetts Senate and now to U.S. senator. Every time I see a Scott Brown bumper sticker that states “He’s for Us,” it reinforces my belief that Brown deserves to continue the work he started in Washington just two short years ago. The United States of America needs representation that puts aside political differences to do what is right. To me, the person in this race capable of doing just that is our current senator, Scott Brown.
