Letter: An alternative to Tweedledum, Tweedledee

To the editor:

This Nov. 6 will be my 20th general election. In each of those elections, as H.L. Mencken put it in 1922, the candidates of the Republican and Democratic parties subjected the voting populace to “deafening, nerve-wracking battle to the death between Tweedledum and Tweedledee.” The 6th Congressional District contest this year is different because of Daniel Fishman’s mature presence sitting between career politicians Tweedledem Tierney and Tweedlecan Tisei.

Mr. Fishman’s adherence to the principles of the Constitution and common sense appealed to me so much that last June I agreed to coordinate collection of voter signatures needed to secure his nomination. I took flack from friends who want to term-limit Tweedledem Tierney by electing Tweedlecan Tisei, and from those who feared Mr. Fishman’s adherence to civil liberties would harm the incumbent’s chances of re-election.

All too often, voters must choose between the lesser of two evils, but this year, at least for Congress, Mr. Fishman provides me, and I am sure a very significant number of others, a chance to vote for what I believe in, a republic, one nation, with liberty and justice for all.
