Rebecca Fanning, Ipswich - 2008 Salem News Student-Athlete Awards

By Matt Jenkins
Staff Writer

The work Rebecca Fanning does inside the walls of Ipswich High School far exceeds what anyone would ask of a student-athlete. Fanning's intelligence shows through in her 3.8 GPA and her SAT scores (730 critical reading, 680 math, 680 writing). Her athleticism shines on the track, on the lacrosse field and the soccer pitch. But the additional value Fanning brings is that she is not simply satisfied by keeping things status quo.

"A letter written to me when Rebecca was a junior resulted in our modifying the junior program in English and History," Ipswich Principal Barry Cahill said. "Her insightful analysis helped move both the English and history faculties to make changes which increased rigor and demand."

In addition to being a valuable member to the classrooms and playing fields of Ipswich, she also captains the mock trial team and serves in the Rotary Interact Club.

Fanning received the Sportsmanship Award for the lacrosse team, and was named Indoor Track MVP in both her freshman and senior seasons.
