Kelly Gibson, Masconomet - 2008 Salem News Student-Athlete Awards

By Matt Jenkins
Staff Writer

Masconomet teachers who have had the pleasure of having Kelly Gibson in one or more of their classes have found out that the 10th-ranked student in a class of 321 goes the distance with every academic project she encounters. Whether it is increasing her study time away from the classroom for a new and difficult subject or making contact with scientists on her own time to help her understanding for a science project, Gibson will do whatever it takes to excel.

"Kelly is the type of student that will push herself and she will seek out the resources to succeed," AP Biology teacher Tammy Due said. "Some people have an internal drive and do not need others to push them, and Kelly is the epitome of this type of person."

The same can be said of Gibson when it comes to athletics. A three-year member of the varsity field hockey team and two-year member of varsity lacrosse, Gibson has been a Cape Ann League All-League choice for two years in field hockey and was an all-star in lacrosse as a junior.

Gibson is a member of both the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, a four-year member of Habitat for Humanity, and was voted vice president of her class in her junior and senior years.
