Gloucester beauty affords panoramic vistas, ocean breezes and more

From the exterior, this Gloucester gem presents like a country cottage plucked from the pages of a fairy tale but like all things magical, therein lies a lovely surprise. Offering panoramic views of the Annisquam River and beyond and boasting a state-of-the-art custom design throughout, this waterfront home blends modern luxury with classic sensibility.

Built in 1928 by the seller’s grandfather, N.A. Faulk, a lifelong resident of Gloucester and mason by trade, the home was restructured in 2006 to accommodate a more contemporary lifestyle. While incorporating high-end systems and modern appointments, many of the original features, such as the arched front door, hand-forged iron work, storage cabinets on the staircase and crown moldings created by Mr. Faulk himself, remain.

“This looks and feels like a brand-new home, thanks to the exquisite choices that were made, yet they were very careful to assure that the character of the home was kept intact,” says Realtor Amanda Armstrong of By the Sea Sotheby’s International Realty. “The Faulks lived in this home their entire lives. Mr. Faulk passed away in 2003. In 2004, after Mrs. Faulk passed away, their granddaughter purchased the home. When she moved in with her family, they enlisted the help of the architectural firm, Machado-Blake Design to assist them in their plan to keep the original look from the front but to add space, lots of natural light and a more modern look overall.”

In order to accomplish this task, the main living area was expanded by 500 feet by raising the roof line on the back of the house, creating a more fluid floor plan and extending the water views from both the downstairs and the newly added master bedroom above.

Wide open and spacious, the kitchen and living room converge to create the perfect space for entertaining with custom designed bamboo cabinetry, top-of-the-line stainless-steel appliances, including a six-burner Wolf stove, a granite-topped island and gleaming pine floors. In the dining room, find a wood-burning fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows to optimize the view. Serving to complement the interior, Armstrong explains, are two new decks and a pergola for added outdoor living space.
