History meets modern comfort in these Beverly condos

Sculpted from an 80-acre estate that is now Centerville, the Pride’s Hill Condominium community is a unique homage to the life’s work of the historical preservationist who created it. The community’s seven units are each the matchless conception of the preservationist and filled with pieces of history from around the world. In fact, the units are so unique that each has its own name, observes listing agent Gayle Estrella of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of Beverly.

“Each unit has its own historical name and they are all just beautiful,” says Estrella. “They have so many interesting and artistic features like beautiful doors or brick walls.” Much of the hardwood flooring, exquisite molding and other adornments have been repurposed from sources as exotic as a 13th-century Spanish monastery or Renaissance France.

The “Turret” unit is the coziest in the complex with one bedroom while the grandest, the “Samuel Corning House” offers four generous bedrooms and a three-room in-law or au pair suite. The remaining units — “The Schoolhouse,” “The Quincy Shaw,” “The Chapel,” “The Carriage House” and “The West Wing” — each boast two lovely bedrooms. All of the homes have been refurbished with top-line Viking appliances, energy efficient heating and central air-conditioning cooling, granite countertops, and abundant storage. While the antique integrity of each home has been respected, every modern comfort one expects in a fine home has been seamlessly integrated. Three of the homes have fireplaces and each home has its own private patio and garage. Laundry is separate inside each home as well.

In 1680, Samuel Corning built the home that serves as the original structure for the community. Corning served as a selectman between 1674 and 1678, and was one of the founders of the first church in Beverly in 1667.

“The developer’s work as a historic preservationist is well-known all over the state,” adds Estrella. “He’s restored properties in the Back Bay and Salem and is respected for preserving the historic integrity of the property while at the same time improving it with the amenities people expect in a modern home.”
