Settle down in historic Rowley

As the timeworn song goes, “everything old is new again” — a sentiment not lost on this historic home. Overlooking Rowley Green and recently renovated from top to bottom, this circa 1700 New England saltbox retains the charming period details that any antique real estate enthusiast would expect.

Reportedly the second-oldest home in town, this classic property is said to have been erected just over 60 years after Rowley was founded. Realtor Eric Towne of Tache Real Estate cautions buyers to not be fooled by numbers, however, for this is a house that is well-suited for today’s contemporary lifestyle.

“While great care was taken to maintain antique features such as exposed beams, gunstock posts and wide pine floors, there have also been a lot of improvements to this warm and charming home,” he says. “Notable updates include electrical and plumbing systems, new 26-foot kitchen, two full baths, and even central air conditioning, an extremely rare upgrade in homes of this age.”

Also unusual for homes of this time period is the open concept and appealing circular flow of the main level. Large airy rooms include the kitchen, living and dining rooms complete with not one but two gas fireplaces, plenty of storage and custom built-ins. The newly remodeled kitchen is fabulous with recessed lighting, stainless-steel appliances, pine flooring and complimentary wood cabinets. Thoughtful spaces such as a cathedraled main foyer and rear mudroom with first-floor laundry offer convenience, while a full bath affords the option of a sprawling first-floor master suite, Towne says.

The second level, featuring three bedrooms with a master en-suite bath, boasts numerous 18th-century elements such as a “good morning” staircase and walls of authentic raised paneling. “This whole house, even with all of the modern additions, is indicative of the pre-revolutionary era. It’s a very distinguished homestead,” Towne says.

Additional amenities include a detached two-car garage, full walk-up attic and a brand-new septic system. Sited on a flat 1-acre yard in the center of this charming country village, this home is just steps from Town Hall and the library and a mere minutes to the commuter rail and major routes.

“This is a home that is all about ‘location, location, location.’ It is a great antique property in a quaint town that has done a wonderful job of maintaining its rural and historic character,” the Realtor says. “At the same time, the house is current and up-to-date, appealing to just about anyone’s taste.”

The house is listed for $399,000. Towne invites prospective buyers to an open house on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at 117 Main St. For more information or to schedule a private viewing, call Eric Towne at Tache Real Estate, 978-745-2004.
