Salem condos offer something for everyone

Should your tastes be geared toward the classic or more to the contemporary, these newly renovated and ideally situated Salem condominiums are sure to fit the bill. Set along the common and close to the commuter rail, waterfront and an active downtown, both offer a chic alternative to big city living.

“Each of these units has very nice historic qualities, but they are quite different,” Keller Williams listing agent Sarah MacBurnie says of the circa-1800 structure. “One clearly offers a more 19th-century feel, while the other has more of a modern feel to it.”

One of three units (the first is owner-occupied), Unit 2 boasts an exquisite blend of antique and new features. Complete with two bedrooms and two full baths, this spacious townhouse has been thoughtfully designed to provide versatility on the second floor, where there is the possibility of two master suites, a home office or a den. On the first level, find a formal dining room with built-in china closet and a large living room with fireplace and wooden shutters. Gleaming hardwood floors, along with beautiful trims and moldings, serve as reminders of the home’s ancestry.

Stunningly refurbished spaces include the gourmet kitchen with granite counters, stainless-steel appliances, ceramic tiling and recessed lighting, and two remarkable full baths. “They were careful to keep the bathrooms historically accurate while adding modern updates,” MacBurnie says. “They installed all new fixtures, laid a nostalgic black-and-white-checkered tile floor, and restored the original claw-foot tubs with up-to-date shower fittings.”

On the market for $334,900, this unit also has basement storage, two parking spots (one garaged) and a private yard with patio.

If you prefer a more current look, Unit 3 is fresh and present. This five-room penthouse offers two bedrooms, an exquisite spa bath with custom tiling and glass-surround shower, and a generous rooftop deck.

The main living area is open and fluid, featuring an entirely exposed brick chimney with fireplace as its focal point. The totally renovated granite and stainless kitchen flows effortlessly into the living and dining rooms. This unit, which lists for $259,000, also includes a laundry closet, central air conditioning and two off-street parking spaces.

“The (two) fireplaces in this unit help to add some historic charm, but this is a very modern loft. It has an exceptional layout with an office nook and multitudes of closet space, not to mention that the deck is like a bonus room of its own,” the Realtor says. “Between these two units, no matter what you may be looking for in a condo, you’re sure to find it here.”

An open house at 34 Pleasant St., Salem, will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information, or to schedule a private viewing, call Sarah MacBurnie at 978-337-9955.
