Seaside estate is elegance exemplified in Marblehead

Quite often, the spectacular is beyond words, but this writer will do her best to capture the extraordinary intricacies of this seaside home. Facing south and sheltered from the winds of the northeast, this Marblehead estate features 15 meticulous rooms; a detached carriage house; and breathtaking views of Ram Island, Preston Beach, Nahant and beyond.

“When these folks bought this house, their foremost goal was to bring it back to its original 1850s elegance. Everything that they’ve done, from the foundation on up, is reflective of the grand style of that era,” says Realtor Dick McKinley of Harborside Realty.

While this house affords every modern convenience imaginable, the owners were very respectful of its ancestry, refurbishing paneling and crown moldings and recycling materials wherever possible.

“We wanted to restore this historic house, so we did as much research as possible, trying to be true to the origins wherever we could. That has been our guiding philosophy. My wife, for example, spent three weeks getting the staircase down to its original mahogany.”

A large portico leads the way to a commanding marble foyer, where exquisite workmanship is apparent at every turn. The large formal living room is inviting with a working fireplace and multiple sets of French doors. The spacious dining room, decorated in rich jewel tones and boasting unrivaled water views, easily accommodates 20-plus dinner guests. Should you prefer a more relaxed space, choose from a library with custom bookcases and a wood-burning fireplace or the sunny 40-foot garden room with walls of glass from which to admire both the ocean and Caribbean blue pool below.

The granite kitchen, surrounded by windows, is multifaceted, featuring a butler’s pantry, breakfast room and cozy sitting area with brick fireplace.

Spanning the two floors above, find an impressive seven bedrooms. A marble bath in the master suite is truly fit for a king with a Jacuzzi soaking tub, oversized glass and tile shower, and large windows for an astonishing view.

Should you be in need of guest quarters or lodging for extended family perhaps, this property has it covered. “This is absolutely, Marblehead’s most stunningly located carriage house, offering an additional 2,400 square feet of restored living space with five/six rooms, including two full baths, full kitchen and a game room,” McKinley said. “It is just remarkable, with cathedral ceilings upstairs, huge hurricane-proof windows, wide open spaces throughout and the best views in town.”

Listed for $4,500,000, this outstanding property is located in a secluded enclave minutes from Atlantic Avenue and comes complete with private beach rights.

“This is a very active neighborhood that is quiet but yet not remote,” the owner says. “We love Marblehead. For us, it has always been all about ‘location, location, location.’”

An open house for this magnificent home is planned for Sunday, Jan. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at 11 Crown Way. For more information or to schedule a private showing, call Realtor Dick McKinley at 617-763-0415. Additional photos may be seen at www.11CrownWay.com.
