Looking for a fun way to spend New Year's Day? Here are The Salem News' Best Bets:
Start the day off with an icy cold dip in the ocean — for a good cause, of course. The fifth annual Freeze Your Tush Off for charity polar plunge takes place at 11 a.m. at the Winter Island boat ramp, 50 Winter Island Road, Salem. The event benefits the Salem Pantry — monetary donations (by cash or check) as well as canned/staple goods will be happily accepted. Tax receipts will be available for donors. Warm up afterward in the nearby function hall, where you'll find raffles and refreshments, as well as T-shirts you can proudly wear as a souvenir of your bravery. For more information, visit www.freezeyourtushoff.org or contact organizer Becky Christie at 978-580-5016.
Don't miss this final chance to view "Portraits from Africa," an exhibit of wildlife images at the Gallery at Grosvenor Park Nursing Center and Rehab that ends today. Don Montemorra of Swampscott shows images from his recent travels in Africa in the exhibit. Grosvenor Park is at 7 Loring Hlls Ave. (in Vinnin Square), Salem. For more information, call 978-741-5700.
