Blue Peacock flaunts new mascot

HAMILTON - While turkeys remain the traditional symbol of Thanksgiving, Susanne Csongor chose a different member of the bird family to decorate her furniture and home accessories shop in Hamilton.

The Blue Peacock store at 264 Bay Road welcomed the newest member of its family last week, a large peacock named Penelope. Penelope is a standing topiary, a steel structure covered in moss that, over time, grows out into a specific shape. The artwork was bought from famed New Jersey-based charitable foundation of cigarette heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke.

"We were looking for something that was eye-catching, something that made a statement," Csongor said. "I think (the peacock) says it all. She's stunning and unusual."

Csongor said that the recent addition to her shop has already yielded some positive feedback.

"The day it went up was the busiest day for us," she said. "People just seemed to flock to the store. I really think she'll be a landmark here in Hamilton."

Csongor added that Penelope plans to brave the harsh New England winter and remain outside the store year-round.

"She symbolizes the type of product we have here. She's elegant, beautiful and she's a great accessory," she said.

He moves his ball closer to the hole on the green and "improves" his lie when he thinks no one is looking. I have tried to overlook Max's transgressions, but others in our golf group talk and joke behind his back. How should I go about stopping the problem without stressing our friendship?

  • Old-fashioned trick may deter deer Q: I'm making plans for my raised beds vegetable garden, now with a fence built around it. The deer did come up and nibble on my new tulips, right next to the house. Going to get some Irish Spring soap to string and hang around the remaining ones. This is what Billings/Rockefeller National Historic Park in Woodstock uses as deer deterrent in their magnificent gardens. Supposedly it works, Barbara. And please tell me how the Irish Spring soap — old formula — works on the deer.
