---- — ‘Behind the Smile’

Behind every smile is a story, and for the Rev. Peter K. Brenner, it’s a story of madness that began the day he was born. On Sunday at 2 p.m., Peabody Historical Society will host Brenner for a lecture called “Behind the Smile: Orphaned by Hitler’s Madness.” Brenner will reflect on his experiences as an orphan who was taken from his Norwegian mother at birth by the Nazis during World War II. He was part of Heinrich Himmler’s Lebensborn program, a master design for cultivating an Aryan race. Five years and three orphanages later, Brenner was brought to America and adopted by an Air Force chaplain. He recounts these experiences in his memoir, “Behind the Smile: Orphaned by Hitler’s Madness.” Brenner’s lecture will take place at the Smith Barn, 38 Felton St., Peabody, and everyone is welcome to attend. Admission is free for Peabody Historical Society members and $5 for nonmembers. For more information, contact Ann Birkner at 978-531-0805.
