---- — Name: Patty Gray Pallazola

Hometown: Ipswich

Description: “January Morning Commute. Taken Jan. 22 from Little Neck in Ipswich. This is a scene of a local clammer heading to a clam flat in the Ipswich River. The scene struck me because I realized this man was actually commuting to work in the frigid weather.

“I spend much of my time off exploring nature and always have my camera in my pocket for any spontaneous local scene that catches my eye, both day and night. Outdoor enthusiast.”

Camera info: Fujifilm Finepix AX, automatic SR setting.

This photo is almost monochromatic. Large areas of light to dark help give it mood. The weight of the leaden sky bears down on the figure in the boat moving on the horizontal sliver of water. The bright color of the overturned boat in the lower right corner draws you away from the whole of the image. Cropping out the distracting boat would improve the photo. By cropping horizontally just above the boat, you get the additional benefit of highlighting the diagonal ribbon of water, which is pointing toward the figure in the boat from the corner. It adds a directional arrow aimed at the figure in the middle of the photo.
