BEAVER FUN IN THE SETTING SUN. Saturday, Oct. 5, 6 to 8 p.m., Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield. Join sanctuary staff for a dusk adventure hike to the ponds and wetlands in search of beavers. Attendees will see beaver lodges, dams, chews, and scent mounds, and, if they are very quiet, maybe even a beaver. Early evening is a magical time at the sanctuary, and new discoveries await. Meet in front of the Nature Center. Program suitable for children ages 6 to 16. Members: $8 adult, $7 child; nonmembers: $10 adult, $8 child. EDIBLE WILD MUSHROOMS WORKSHOP. Sunday, Oct. 6, 1 to 4 p.m., Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield. Join field biologist, naturalist, and nature artist Erika Sonder for a workshop on how to identify a few of the most common wild edible mushrooms, and get ideas on how to prepare and cook them. Program begins indoors with an introduction to mycology, a look at samples, and discussion of characteristics to differentiate edible mushrooms from the most poisonous ones, and then outside for a walk to find mushrooms. Return to the barn to cook up some samples to taste. Although Mass Audubon does not permit collecting on its properties, Sonder will discuss similar sites on the North Shore where collecting is permitted. Meet in the barn. Dress for weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Program for adults; $25 member, $30 nonmember. Registration required at www.massaudubon.org or 978-887-9264.
