Family Festival offers up local bands

Music Notes

Several local groups are on the bill for Danvers Family Festival's "Local Music Festival," or Band Showcase, this weekend. According to Andrew Malkin of Danvers, the event's organizer, the bands represent diverse styles of music — metal, hard-core and indie rock.

The festival will take place at the Masonic Temple, 30 High St., on Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $5, and all proceeds will go to the Donny Barnett Scholarship Fund. Barnett was a longtime Danvers Family Festival organizer who succumbed to cancer last year.

Local Music Festival groups

AOL (American Over Load): A rock band formed at The Music Connection in Danvers, as a "rock school" group a few years ago. AOL is made up of high school students from Beverly and Danvers, said Malkin, a recent Berklee College of Music graduate who teaches at The Music Connection.

Bulbasaur and the French Revolution: A rock/indie band made up of recent Danvers High School graduates.

Autumn Above: Beverly-based acoustic-metal band.

Characters: An indie-rock/experimental band composed of members from around the North Shore. This is Characters' second year playing the Band Showcase.

URSA: A hard-core band, with Danvers residents.

Vallon: A metal band fronted by singer Jimmy Mercer of Danvers. Vallon has played the festival several times.

Experimental music

Stop by Experimental Art Gallery & Studio, on Artist's Row in Salem, to hear Lisa Marie and Silverstone Steve do an acoustic performance from 5 to 7 p.m. today.

Lisa Marie is versatile singer/songwriter who plays original music and covers R&B, rock, funk, swing, blues, folk, gospel, country, rockabilly, pop, soul and jazz tunes. Silvertone Steve is a guitarist who plays with The Transistors, according to Sara Ashodian, co-owner of Experimental.

  • Pet Connection: How to prevent a lost-pet crisis Tonka, a beloved Jack Russell terrier and member of a Salem family, disappeared on Halloween while his owners were giving out treats and getting their kids into costumes for trick-or-treating.
    The devastated parents called the veterinary practice, Animal Control Officer Donald Famico and the Salem police to see if any lost animals had been turned in. Very little sleep was achieved that night. Mom and dad scoured the neighborhood looking for Tonka and contacted everyone they knew to help them find him. They had no idea if Tonka had been lost or stolen. The next morning, their young children were so enraptured with their Halloween candy they did not notice Tonka was missing, and their wise mother got them off to school calmly without distressing them with the bad news. Then she went back about her search.
