North Shore religion news in brief

Musicians Kevin Margolius and David Sparr will perform a concert titled “Faces of the Night,” featuring Jewish music of danger, dreams and celebration, on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Temple Beth Shalom, 489 Lowell St., Peabody. Wine, cheese and crackers will be served from 6:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the concert from 7 to 8 p.m., ending with a dessert reception. Margolius, a tenor, serves as the cantorial intern at Temple Beth Shalom and a student in the cantorial ordination program of Hebrew College. He is also the Mary Wolfman Epstein conducting fellow of the Zamir Chorale of Boston and the conductor of the Prozdor High School a cappella choir. Sparr, a pianist, has been the music director and accompanist at Temple Ohabei Shalom and is the owner/engineer of Little Dog Studios. In addition to accompanying and/or recording many of New England’s cantors, Sparr has also been working extensively with Argentinian cantors Gaston Bogomolni and Elias Rosemberg. St. Michael’s Choir will offer a service of Lessons and Carols for the Feast of Epiphany on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m. at the church, 26 Pleasant St., Marblehead. Music includes “A Child My Choice” by Richard Dirksen, “Bethlehem Down” by Peter Warlock and “What Sweeter Music” by John Rutter. “Moving on After Moving In,” a small group study for women, is based on the book “After the Boxes are Unpacked: Moving on After Moving In” by Susan Miller. The Bible-based discussion group will address emotional struggles and opportunities for spiritual growth as participants start fresh in their new communities. Eight sessions will meet on Sunday evenings, beginning Jan. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, second floor, CLC building, 179 County Road, Ipswich. Everyone is welcome to participate in the sixth annual Jimmy Myers 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Monday, Jan. 21, at the Jewish Community Center, 4 Community Road, Marblehead. Myers, a Swampscott native, was a beloved coach at the J for 25 years, where he mentored thousands of kids about good sportsmanship and ran youth and adult basketball leagues. Nearly 100 kids and adults competed in the tourney last year. This year’s schedule: Grades 3-5 check-in, 9 a.m.; games start 9:30 a.m. Grades 6-8 check-in, 11:30 a.m.; games start at noon. Grades 9-12 check-in, 2 p.m.; games start 2:30 p.m. Adults check-in, 6:30 p.m.; games start 7 p.m. The fee is $45 per three-person team. All money raised goes toward sports and recreation programs at the JCC. The Choir of Christ the Redeemer will sing music of William Billings, Charles Callahan, John Joubert, Austin Lovelace, Alice Parker, John Weaver and others at “Lessons and Carols” on Sunday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m. at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church, 188 Elliott St., Route 62, Danvers. The congregation will sing hymns of the season, and the nine Scripture lessons will be read by parishioners and clergy. The service will last approximately an hour and a half. A parent orientation meeting for Our Whole Lives, a sexuality education program that will be offered to teens in the spring and fall jointly by the Unitarian Universalist Congregations of Marblehead and Salem, is being held Saturday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Marblehead congregation, 28 Mugford St. The program, which offers registration to nonmembers, will be held in 18 sessions divided between meetings in the spring and then again in the fall, and will provide some sessions at each location. The curriculum has been offered at many private schools, which purchase it from the denomination headquarters. Trainers for the program attend mandatory training and are prescreened by the congregations. The parent orientation meeting is mandatory for participating families and includes a sign-off by parents and guardians. Two socials will follow, in February and March, for the group and its leaders.
