Pet of the week

The Salem News

---- — Approximately 10 days ago, someone found Tuhla, a spayed Chihuahua and beagle mix, abandoned in the freezing cold in the parking lot of The Home Depot on Route 1, says Betty Heckman of Middleton, the retired animal control officer for Middleton and Danvers. Heckman runs Strays in Need, a nonprofit that takes in stray cats and dogs and finds them new homes. The resident took the dog to the Danvers Animal Hospital. Tuhla is about 10 years old and plump. She also suffers from cherry eye, a bulge in the gland of the dog’s third eyelids in the corner of her eye. The condition can be corrected with surgery, Heckman said, but the operation costs approximately $1,000.

“Maybe someone will be kind enough to make a donation for her,” Heckman said.

The dog was nicknamed by Heckman’s daughter from the fact that she was found at the home improvement warehouse, where tools are sold, Heckman said.

Those interested in donating to or adopting Tuhla can call Heckman at 978-777-0825 or the Danvers Animal Hospital, 367 Maple St., at 978-774-0045.
