Best Bets for Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12

Looking for something to do this weekend? Here are The Salem News' Best Bets:

Raise money for a cause of your choice in Coast of Hope's "Walk ’Cause You Believe!,” today at the Crane Estate, 290 Argilla Road, Ipswich. Routes include 5K and 2K paved/unpaved paths out to Steep Hill Beach, and a 2K paved route for those with strollers or wheelchairs. The event kicks off with an annual origami paper crane drop. Same-day registration starts at 7:15 a.m. at the estate's casino, followed by the walk at 8 a.m. Cost to participate is $15/person, $40/family. For more information, visit www.coastofhope.org.

Spring means green and growth, and there's no better reminder than the many plant sales taking place today throughout the North Shore. Here's a quick roundup:

  • 9 to 11 a.m., Gerry 5 VFA, 210 Beacon St., Marblehead, sponsored by the Marblehead Garden Club
  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Second Congregational Church, 35 Conant St., Beverly; featuring silent auction and MGH Bloodmobile
  • 9 a.m. to noon, Hall Haskell House lawn, 36 S. Main St., Ipswich (if it rains: Boone Hall at Ascension Memorial Church, 31 County St.), featuring heirloom tomatoes, annuals, perennials, herbs, antique plants and face-painting for children.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Church of the Holy Name front lawn, corner of Monument Avenue and Thomas Road, Swampscott; also featuring home-baked treats and hardcover and paperback books; rain or shine.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Peabody Institute Library main library, courtyard lobby, 82 Main St., Peabody; featuring gently used books, book bags, mugs, note cards, and other merchandise with library and literacy messages.

Join instructors from Cape Ann Waldorf School for a hands-on program to harvest honey and beeswax, and learn about the honeybee and how humans and honeybees can support one another, from 10 a.m. to noon at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield. This event is designed for families with children ages 5 and older, and participants will bring home a little bear filled with honey. Cost is $9 for adults, $7 for children (discount for Mass Audubon members). Register by calling 978-887-9264.
