North Shore religion news in brief

The members of the Congregational Church of Topsfield, United Church of Christ, have named the Rev. Marthinus Riekert as the church’s 43rd senior pastor. Riekert is currently pastoring a church in Auckland, New Zealand. He will preach his first Sunday service in Topsfield on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9:30 a.m. The church is located at 9 E. Common St.

The third annual Run-a-Latke Family Fun 5K and Hanukkah party takes place on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m., at 44 Burrill St., Swampscott. There will be children’s programming during the race and a celebration with latkes and doughnuts at the finish line, followed by the lighting of a giant Lego menorah. The Christian Women’s Connection December brunch will be held Monday, Dec. 9, from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. in the Lighthouse Point Room at the Danversport Yacht Club, 161 Elliott St., Danvers. This month’s event features songs of the season and guest speaker Alice Kellogg, a cancer survivor and paraprofessional in special education, who will discuss God’s sustaining power through life’s obstacles. Brunch is $13 inclusive. Free baby-sitting available for children up to age 5. Reservations are required by Saturday, Dec. 7. Thomas Howard and the Rev. Jurgen Liias’ six-week series “What Does the Catholic Church Really Teach” continues on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 7 to 8 p.m., in St. Margaret’s Rectory, 675 Hale St., Beverly Farms.
