CASINO NIGHT. LOCKS OF LOVE. Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. at New Wave Salon, 67 High St. One hundred percent of a $25 donation will go to Locks of Love and will result in a 10-inch haircut donation with complete style, trim, updo, braid and mini manicure. ETHICAL ELECTRONICS RECYCLING. At Tower School, 75 West Shore Drive, Marblehead, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.¬ Open to the public. Cost $1 per pound of used electronics. Proceeds to environmental initiatives at Tower School. Bring TVs, computers, monitors, phones, keyboards, drives, cables, copiers, printers, cartridges, fax machines, stereo equipment, speakers, CD and DVD players, telephones, remote controls, VCRs, projectors, radios, answering machines, camcorders, electric typewriters, microwaves, toasters, audio tapes, and floppy diskettes. No hazardous waste accepted. Nothing collected will be tipped into landfills, incinerated as solid waste or dumped in developing countries. COMMUNITY ROLLER SKATING PARTY. Buker, Cutler and Winthrop elementary schools join together for a Community Roller Skating Party on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Roller Palace, 130 Sohier Road, Beverly. SIZZLE, STYLE, SWAGGER. Ipswich High School Class of 2010 fashion show, on Monday, Nov. 16, at the Ipswich Country Club. LET'S CLAW AT CANCER. Marketing students at Beverly High School are encouraging the public to fight cancer by donating to the Jimmy Fund. They have designed a flier with donation information that can be downloaded at http://clawatcancer.com, where T-shirts are also sold and raffles held to benefit the Jimmy Fund. HAWC FOOD DRIVE. HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change, formerly Help for Abused Women and their Children) is appealing for donations of grocery store gift cards (specifically, Shaw's and Market Basket) and will also gladly accept donations of nonperishable food items to distribute to families who need the help during upcoming holidays and winter months. Cards or donations may be delivered or mailed to the HAWC office, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Shetland Office Park at 27 Congress St., Suite 201, Salem.   • Pet Connection: How to prevent a lost-pet crisis Tonka, a beloved Jack Russell terrier and member of a Salem family, disappeared on Halloween while his owners were giving out treats and getting their kids into costumes for trick-or-treating.
    The devastated parents called the veterinary practice, Animal Control Officer Donald Famico and the Salem police to see if any lost animals had been turned in. Very little sleep was achieved that night. Mom and dad scoured the neighborhood looking for Tonka and contacted everyone they knew to help them find him. They had no idea if Tonka had been lost or stolen. The next morning, their young children were so enraptured with their Halloween candy they did not notice Tonka was missing, and their wise mother got them off to school calmly without distressing them with the bad news. Then she went back about her search.

This morning when I showed up at the park where neighborhood dogs and their owners gather every day, there was one woman standing there with her dog, Daisy, a West Highland terrier. Her dog ran over to my dog, greeting us warmly. Daisy's owner was not so sunny. She responded to my bright "good morning" with a question: "Where is everybody?" She made me feel invisible.
