Children ages 5 to 9 (with adults) are invited to take part in Planting Day at the Peabody Institute Library, South Branch, 78 Lynn St., Peabody, at 3:30 p.m. Children can pick flower and vegetable seeds to plant, then take them home so they can transplant them into their own gardens and watch them grow. Hear Quincy S. Abbot talk about his new book, “From Schoolboy to Soldier: The Correspondence and Journals of Edward Stanley Abbot, 1853­–1863” at 7 p.m. at Beverly Historical Society, 117 Cabot St., Beverly. Abbot will speak about his ancestor and his extraordinary writings, the process of researching one’s family history and the rewards of doing so. Judy Gates, 70, returned home in January 2012 after three years in the Peace Corps serving as a business volunteer in Mongolia. Tonight at 7:30, she will share her experiences in an illustrated presentation accompanied by samples of the local crafts. It all takes place at the Collins Room of the Ipswich Public Library, 25 N.
