A group of 6- to 9-year-olds recently held a charity bake sale at Dom's Trattoria after taking a class led by restaurant chef/owner Angela Dominick as part of the Glen Urquhart summer program.

Erica Miranda is currently serving with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, a 10-month, residential, team-based program in which teams of 18- to 24-year-olds travel the country and help improve communities. Miranda's team is based in Sacramento, Calif.

Danielle Lapierre and Gabrielle Schmidt were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at DePaul University in Chicago.

Margaret Gatterman recently received a bachelor's degree in illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.

Mildred Aroko, a 2010 graduate of Salem Academy Charter School, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Financial Service Centers of America, the national trade association representing the financial service center industry. Aroko will be attending Bates College in the fall.

Charlie Hartfelder was named to the dean's list for the fall and spring semesters at Syracuse University. Hartfelder will soon be presenting a thesis paper concerning the Harriet Tubman Homestead, where he is participating in an archaeological dig for the Council of Northeastern Historic Archeology.

Nathaly Baez, a Salem High School graduate, and Kirsten Morse, a North Shore Technical High School graduate, were recently welcomed into North Shore Community College's Presidential Scholars program, which focuses on leadership development.

Drew Anderson recently took part in the Campus MovieFest at LaSalle University, where he co-wrote and directed a short film that was awarded Best Comedy. The winners were entitled to an expenses-paid trip to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Anderson is entering his junior year at LaSalle.

  • North Shore religion news in brief Clifton Lutheran Church, located at 150 Humphrey St., Marblehead, elected Steven Maio as the new president of the congregation of Clifton Lutheran Church. The election celebration was held at the church's annual congregational meeting on Sunday, Feb. 5. Steven Maio replaces outgoing president Jim Koehn. Maio will serve a three-year term.

    The short movie, which will screen at the Winter Film Festival on Thursday, Feb. 16, tells the story of an 18-mile bicycle ride that Bonner took from his home in Marblehead to Boston.

  • Pet Connection: How to prevent a lost-pet crisis Tonka, a beloved Jack Russell terrier and member of a Salem family, disappeared on Halloween while his owners were giving out treats and getting their kids into costumes for trick-or-treating.
    The devastated parents called the veterinary practice, Animal Control Officer Donald Famico and the Salem police to see if any lost animals had been turned in. Very little sleep was achieved that night. Mom and dad scoured the neighborhood looking for Tonka and contacted everyone they knew to help them find him. They had no idea if Tonka had been lost or stolen. The next morning, their young children were so enraptured with their Halloween candy they did not notice Tonka was missing, and their wise mother got them off to school calmly without distressing them with the bad news. Then she went back about her search.
