Prepare your son or daughter ahead of time for the bus ride to school by going to today's Bus Safety Open House, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Beverly Public Schools Transportation Department, 25 Sohier Road, Beverly, behind Briscoe School. Parents and kids can ride on the big yellow school bus, meet drivers and monitors, and get answers to questions about school transportation. The open house also features refreshments, special guests, Shriners with Kid’s Safe Kits, Operation Lifesaver from the MBTA, Beverly Fire Department, YMCA Afterschool, and agencies with information. Do you know what Jane Austen really looked like? Test your "Sense and Sensibility" during "Jane Austen: Portrait of a Lady," a talk by Price Grisham tonight at the Salem Athenaeum.
