The holiday season is difficult for animal shelters, especially in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which increased the number of lost and abandoned pets needing help. Local animal lovers can help the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem by donating food, toys and treats for homeless dogs and cats through Best Friends Pet Care’s 12th Annual Animal Angel Tree campaign. The Animal Angel Tree, featuring photos and information about needy dogs and cats, is located in Best Friends Pet Cares’ lobby at 15 Main St., in Wakefield. If you don’t want to drive there, you can call to request information about a particular pet and deliver the donation to the animal shelter in Salem. For more information or to make a donation, call 781-245-1237. Donations will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 31.
