Late surge lifts Hamilton-Wenham to win over Ipswich

LITTLE LEAGUE

Hamilton-Wenham 10, Ipswich 0

Despite holding just a 1-0 lead going into the third inning Hamilton-Wenham was able to dispatch Ipswich by virtue of the 10-run rule.

A two-out, two-run single by Patrick McDonough (two hits) in the third, combined with an RBI double by Nathan Rawlins and a two-run double by Austin Michel in the fourth inning helped earn Hamilton-Wenham a five-inning win.

Starter Chris Anastas went the distance for the victors, giving up three hits and striking out six batters.

Ipswich was eliminated with the loss.

Ipswich 2, Salem Nationals 0

Eddie Ortiz allowed just four hits while striking out eight but two unearned runs in the first inning ended the Salem Nationals' tournament run on Saturday.

Middleton 9, Boxford 4

A three-run home run from Ethan Harris in the first inning helped Middleton eliminate Boxford from the tournament. Daniel Dempsey pitched 5 2/3 innings for Middleton, striking out 12 batters. Michael Manni knocked in three runs on two doubles, Kosta Hantzis had an RBI double and Calvin Carbone collected two singles. Aaron Shibel pitched four innings of relief for Boxford, with Kyle Kowalski and Sal Cioto coming up big defensively.

Beverly East 18, Manchester-Essex 1

Twenty-five hits were compiled in the game by Beverly East, including home runs from Maximo Ricone, Mike Campetelli, Brady MacGlauglin and Mark Vivenzio. Campetelli pitched three innings, striking out five batters and surrendering the lone run. Alex Greco pitched the fourth, and final (10-run rule), inning for Beverly East, which has produced 32 runs in its two tournament games, going 1-1.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Peabody 8, North Andover 3

Peabody improved to 2-4 behind a solid pitching performance from Jared Shields, who went five innings allowing one earned run on four hits. Peter Sucharewicz blasted an RBI double in the third inning and added a single. Tommy Moules had an RBI triple in the Tanners' five-run fifth inning. Peabody will travel to play Marblehead today.

    Salem's volume of road races, and the fact that many of them run through the same sections of the city, had come under scrutiny by the council this winter.

    Today, he's less positive about a process that has seen revolution followed by elections and then, to his shock, the prosecution of Americans and others working to assist in the creation of a stable democracy.

  • A Salem flag-raising in Afghanistan SALEM — For Veterans Day, third-graders from the Witchcraft Heights School wrote letters to U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
    The school has done this in the past, but this time was different. This time they sent them to a soldier from Salem, U.S. Army Pfc. Michael Levesque.
