SWAMPSCOTT — Superintendent Lynne Celli has decided on a man with local roots to follow Brian Watson as principal of the middle school.
Robert Murphy, now the principal of Pickering Middle School in Lynn, will begin in Swampscott on July 1.
Murphy was selected from a field of three finalists and 44 total applicants to head the school, after the recent resignation of Watson, who was hired as an administrator in Cambridge. He left the Swampscott school in mid-March, citing health reasons, and is scheduled to begin his new job in Cambridge in the fall.
Vice Principal Megan Bonomolo is leading the school until Murphy arrives.
Murphy is already familiar with the community.
"I grew up in Swampscott a quarter-mile from the school," Murphy said.
He doesn't live in town anymore but said he is looking forward to being part of a school system that places a high value on education.
Murphy said that in Swampscott, he can look forward to "great support systems" where he will be able to create a "high level of expectations."
His experience has also taught him how to make sure a school is a safe and disciplined learning environment, he said.
Between now and July 1, Murphy said he would be taking part in occasional transitional meetings in order to smooth his move over the town line.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity," he said.
