Bicyclist critical after collision with bus

SALEM — A 47-year-old Salem man was flown to a Boston hospital in critical condition this morning after he was struck by an MBTA bus while riding his bike across Washington Street.

The accident occurred at 7:23 a.m. at the intersection of Federal and Washington streets, near the old Salem District Court.

Salem police believe the man was riding a 26” mountain bike inside the crosswalk when he came out of Federal Street and into the path of oncoming traffic heading toward Bridge Street. Two lanes of traffic were at a standstill but the far left lane was open, and that’s the lane in which the cyclist was struck, Salem patrolman Barry Driscoll said at the scene.

The rider was not wearing a helmet and was wearing headphones.

He was taken to Salem Hospital, then flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, police said.

The 51-year-old driver of the MBTA bus is expected to undergo routine tests as a result of the accident, police said, but there’s no indication at this point that he was impaired.

A state police accident reconstruction team was at the scene, and MBTA transit police were also taking part in the investigation. The bus, with damage to its front, was towed from the scene just before 10 a.m.
