'Shop Small,' shop local on Saturday

Let’s face it. Everyone loves a bargain!

The Friday after Thanksgiving is known for allowing the shoppers among us to score big deals at large retailers. Then, in recent years, Cyber Monday has enticed us with online deals. But with all the hype, it’s easy for a small, independent retailer to get lost in the huge media campaigns of Fortune 500 companies.

That’s where Nov. 30 comes in. In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday, dedicated to helping support the small businesses that help to create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country.

In Peabody, they are taking this day to heart. For the third year in a row, the Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce is an official supporter and neighborhood leader for Small Business Saturday.

“The Chamber is dedicated to sharing ideas and energy to promote our local economy. As a sector, small businesses are the greatest job creators and keep our economy going. A strong holiday start can make a big impact locally,” said Deanne Healey, president and CEO.

This year, the City of Peabody has joined the bandwagon, too, hanging banners from the lampposts downtown during November encouraging people to SHOP LOCAL.

“We are fortunate to have the Northshore Mall here in Peabody, which is a destination unto itself and a tremendous asset to our community,” said Mayor Ted Bettencourt, “but we also want to remind consumers to allocate some of their holiday shopping budget to locally owned businesses.”

From the frozen yogurt shop that routinely hosts fundraisers for local groups to the itamae who creates his own sushi specialty, neighborhoods throughout the commonwealth are brimming with special stores and businesses that are the heartbeat of our communities. Small Business Saturday is a day to support the local businesses we love, so please remember to Shop Small on November 30, as well as throughout the year.
