CPA committee to hold public hearing

---- — BEVERLY — The city has scheduled a public hearing to solicit input on proposed guidelines for applying for Community Preservation Act funding and the criteria for selecting projects.

The Beverly Community Preservation Committee will hold the public hearing on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Voters in Beverly adopted the Community Preservation Act in November 2012. The law allows communities to establish a fund using a property tax surcharge — 1 percent, in Beverly’s case — and matching state funds to support open-space acquisition, historic preservation and affordable housing.

Citizens groups, nonprofit organizations or city government can submit proposals for CPA funding to the Community Preservation Committee, which recommends projects to the City Council.

The committee has been meeting since August to draft guidelines and criteria for proposals. The public hearing is designed to give residents a chance to comment on them, as well as to talk about possible projects, according to the committee.

The proposed criteria will be posted on the committee’s Web page on Dec. 6. Copies can also be obtained from the Planning Department. In addition to the public hearing, written comments may be sent to the Planning Department, 191 Cabot St., Beverly, MA, 01915, by noon on Friday, Dec. 20.
