Firefighters corral 2-alarm fire in Marblehead Old town

MARBLEHEAD — Firefighters yesterday quelled a two-alarm fire at a two-family home in Old Town.

No one was injured in the blaze.

A neighbor spotted the fire and called 911 shortly before 9 a.m., fire Capt. Walter Conrad said.

"We found fire and heavy smoke coming out of the rear of the house when we got there," Conrad said.

The location of the fire was a concern for firefighters because of the homes are close to each other in historic Old Town.

Firefighters went inside the front door and tried to hose down the blaze.

"We tried attacking it there, but it got a little too big so we had to get to it from the outside," Conrad said.

The bulk of the fire took about a half-hour to control. Afterwards, firefighters checked the walls and ceiling for any extension.

No one was home when the fire started. There was fire damage in the first-floor kitchen and in a hallway and some on the second floor. There was smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home.

Conrad said the fire does not appear suspicious.

Fire Lt. Charles Cerrutti and firefighter Greg Lydon are investigating the blaze, along with police Detective Sean Brady and the state fire marshal's office.

Two engines and a ladder truck responded from Marblehead Fire Department. Salem, Swampscott and Lynn firefighters responded to the scene. Beverly, Nahant, and Danvers firefighters provided station coverage.
