City's interest in farmers' market near full bloom

PEABODY — The phone is ringing more at City Hall, and that is a sign that the seed planted seven years ago downtown has gradually matured and is poised to blossom.

"The word is out," Assistant Director of Planning Blair Haney said about the city's Farmers' Market. "We're getting significantly more calls about it this year. It's a reflection of the success that we've had over the last couple of years."

The market returns tomorrow. It will continue on Tuesdays throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall, until at least October. Fresh produce will be available, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., along Railroad Avenue behind Peabody District Court.

Two new vendors will be involved this summer. Song Vang Yang of Flats Mentor Farm in Fitchburg will offer many Asian vegetables and herbs, including boc choi, Chinese broccoli, Asian arugula and Asian mustard. Bill Simone of Simone Farm in Methuen will be selling lettuce, radishes, herbs and heirloom vegetables like eggplant.

"We're definitely excited," Haney said of the new additions.

They will be joining Penny Srybny of Hereford Valley Farm in Andover, a six-year staple at Peabody's market. She will have fresh tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, pickling cukes, zucchini, summer squash, lettuce, a variety of beans, basil and pea pods for sale.

Parking is abundant, Haney said, and car side service is available.

"The Peabody Farmers' Market is another summertime attraction to bring residents and visitors to our downtown," Mayor Michael Bonfanti said in a press release. "It is great to see the market grow every year."
