Police: Resident tried to run down garbagemen

DANVERS — New trash regulations that went into effect at the beginning of the month are taking some getting used to.

Just ask a Danversport man who police said threatened to kill and then tried to run down garbagemen yesterday after they refused to take his garbage-filled trash bin because it was too heavy.

Police arrested Kujtim Sheraj, 41, of 87 Water St., Danvers, on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and threatening to commit a crime.

His arrest came after an argument with the garbagemen shortly after 10 a.m.

Police Capt. Ed Plamowski said workers with JRM Hauling & Recycling were picking up the trash at Sheraj's home.

"For some reason, one of the barrels was overweight so they didn't take all the trash," Plamowski said.

Sheraj saw the barrel was left on the curb and came out and told the worker "if he didn't take the trash, he would kill him," according to Plamowski.

Police said Sheraj kept yelling and screaming, so the workers left the street and continued to North Shore Avenue to continue their work.

Near 14 North Shore Ave., police said Sheraj attempted to run down one of the workers with his blue Chrysler Pacific minivan. The truck's driver called police.

"Apparently, the homeowner came after the workers at a high rate of speed, forcing the worker on the truck to jump out of the way," Plamowski said.

Detective Eric Clarizia and Patrolman Adam French responded to the scene and later arrested Sheraj at his home.

New trash regulations went into effect in Danvers on July 1.

The new rules limit trash barrels to 32 gallons or less and restrict a single-family home to no more than five barrels. The limit had been 10.
