Pair arrested on way home from court

SALEM — A day in court Wednesday didn't stop a "notorious duo" from making another notch on their already lengthy criminal records, police said.

Naman Spencer, 34, and Mary Garuty-Fleury, 32, both of 116 Lafayette St., Salem, had just left Salem District Court, where they have been facing charges that they stole and sold a "bounce house" children's amusement from a Danvers business where Spencer used to work, when they headed to Walgreens and passed forged prescriptions, Salem police Lt. Conrad Prosniewski said.

The pair were arrested at the New Derby Street store after trying to fill phony scripts for oxycodone, Adderall and alprazolam, police said.

Prosniewski said the pair, who had also been involved in a shoplifting incident at Walmart in Danvers, had been ordered repeatedly to stay out of trouble while awaiting trial in those cases, but "blatantly ignored" those orders.

Because of that, he urged Judge Michael Lauranzano to revoke their bails in the earlier cases.

While the judge didn't do that, he did hike their bail to $1,500 each.

Garuty-Fleury, who'd been released from custody on just $50 bail after Wednesday's arrest, was taken into custody again in the courtroom.

They're due back in court on March 14.
