HAMILTON — State police continue to investigate the fiery crash that killed a New Hampshire truck driver and left a Hamilton resident with severe burns early Saturday morning on Route 1 in Saugus.
Kevin Fitzgerald, 60, of Woodland Mead in South Hamilton, was listed in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday, according to state police. No information was available on Fitzgerald's condition yesterday.
Fitzgerald was among those injured as a gasoline tanker truck crashed around 2:30 a.m., rolled over and exploded, sending a river of flaming gasoline streaming down the highway and killing the truck driver, Neal Michaud of Manchester, N.H.
Route 1 was closed until Sunday afternoon. Three other motorists were hurt but suffered less severe injuries than Fitzgerald, police said.
"The investigation will take several weeks to complete," said David Procopio, state police spokesman. "With so many vehicles involved, and some extraordinary facts and circumstances, we estimate several weeks."
As of yesterday, no charges or citations had been filed against any of the involved parties, Procopio said.
Fitzgerald, an attorney, is listed in the Hamilton street directory as W. Kevin Fitzgerald. Also listed at his address is Robin Mayer-Fitzgerald, 65, and a daughter Meaghan, 28.
Fitzgerald graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 1977 and is an emeritus member of its board of trustees, according to the school's website.
The Fitzgerald family could not be reached yesterday.
