PEABODY —
A Chelsea man was sentenced this afternoon to 9 to 13 years in state prison, after being found guilty yesterday of manslaughter in the beating death of a Peabody father.
Fernando Aristy, 25, claimed that he’d acted in self-defense in the early morning hours of Oct. 9, 2010, outside a Lynn warehouse where he had encountered Chad McDonald, a 34-year-old father of two.
McDonald was struck in the head repeatedly with a wooden board, and died 11 days later of massive head injuries.
After hearing from McDonald’s widow and other family members, as well as from Aristy’s brother, Salem Superior Court Judge David Lowy imposed the sentence, which is what state sentencing guidelines recommend.
Prosecutors had sought nearly the maximum, an 18- to 20 -year prison term, for voluntary manslaughter.
Aristy’s lawyer has already filed a motion for a new trial.
