BEVERLY — Superintendent James Hayes could be retiring and landing a new job all around the same time.
Hayes, who will retire next month as Beverly Public Schools superintendent, has been named a finalist for the superintendent's job in two New Hampshire communities, Dover and Newmarket, according to the School Committee chairpersons in those towns.
Hayes will retire in Beverly next month and will be eligible to collect a pension. Retired public employees are allowed to work in another state while collecting a pension from Massachusetts, said Erika Glaster, deputy executive director of the Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement System.
Hayes' current salary is $164,000. The maximum pension for public employees is 80 percent of the average of their three highest salary years, Glaster said.
Hayes, 62, is a New Hampshire native who lives in Hampstead, N.H. He was a math teacher in Dover and a high school principal in Milford, N.H., before coming to Beverly.
He had also been a finalist for the superintendent's job in a New Hampshire district that covers six communities, but he withdrew.
Hayes could not be reached for comment.
