New garden has a successful season

HAMILTON-WENHAM — Everything from beets and tomatoes to peas and sunflowers grew in 30 raised beds this summer at the Hamilton-Wenham Community Garden.

Organizers say the project’s inaugural year was a success. They are planning to continue — and possibly expand — the garden next year.

The garden, a collaboration between Hamilton-Wenham Green and the Hamilton-Wenham Open Land Trust, is next to Pingree Park, across the street from the Hamilton-Wenham Library.

Participants ranged from grade-schoolers to senior citizens, said Greg Horner, president of Hamilton-Wenham Green.

“It was great seeing the wide mix of ages and (the gardeners) learning from each other,” Horner said. “It was great to see how much the community really embraced it and how much demand there was. We already have a waiting list for next year, with some gardeners planning to come back.”

A 30-by-30-foot plot in the garden was dedicated to grow produce for the Acord Food Pantry in Hamilton. Volunteers from Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School and the Hamilton-Wenham Mothers’ Club tended the plot.

Community gardeners were also encouraged to “grow a row” for Acord, and they did. All together, the gardens produced more than 2,000 pounds of fresh produce for the pantry, Horner said.

The community garden is open to people who live or work in Hamilton or Wenham. Participants pay a $50 annual fee to garden a 4-by-12-foot raised bed.
