Police probe Mack Park shooting

By Bethany Bray

---- — SALEM — Police are going through the neighborhoods surrounding Mack Park, seeking details on a shooting that occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday.

“It was a warm summer night. Somebody might have heard something, saw something,” said Salem police Detective Capt. Thomas Griffin. “We’re looking to interview anyone that was in the area.”

A handgun was used after an altercation between five men in their late teens and early 20s Saturday, Griffin said. Three of the men were at the top of the hill, near the basketball courts at Mack Park, when they were approached by two men carrying handguns.

“(It) ultimately turned into what the victims say was a robbery,” Griffin said. “There was a little bit of an altercation, which resulted in the one victim being shot.”

The man, shot in the chest, was taken to Salem Hospital. He was conscious and talking after the incident and is expected to recover, Griffin said.

Police yesterday were not releasing the names of any of the people involved or details on any possible suspects.

Investigators have not determined if the two parties — the two men and the group of three men — knew each other, Griffin said.

Griffin, along with Salem detectives Daniel Tucker and Eric Connolly, Sgt. Kristian Hanson and Lt. Steve Bona, is investigating the incident with support from the State Police and Essex County District Attorney’s office.

Griffin said Salem police have been getting calls from residents concerned about the incident.

“We’re marching forward with the investigation,” Griffin said. “... I know people are concerned. We’re doing everything we can to solve this.”

Mack Park is off Grove and Mason streets, near Harmony Grove Cemetery. Anyone with information about the incident should call Salem police at 978-744-1212.
